FrontPage Tips by Ward Cameron Enterprises
Take Your Web Site to New Levels

Create a Quick Jump Hyperlink Menu

I'm often asked for a simple way to create a drop-down box that allows quick jump to other websites. While this can easily be done with coding, Microsoft has been kind enough to provide a free plug-in tool to do the job. Check out the following example. As you select the various websites, you'll be quickly transported to the new destination.

How do you take advantage of this free software add-in. First, you need to download the FrontPage Software Development Kit. The Add-in is part of this extensive kit. To download the software, visit: http://fpsdk.frontpagelink.com/ and follow the instructions. When you double-click the file to install it, it will expand the files to a directory on your hard disk, C:\FPSDK by default.

If you expand the files to this directory, then open C:\FPSKD\Files\IWC and you'll see a folder called jumpURL and a file called JumpURL.ini. Both of these files will need to be copied to your FrontPage Directory. By default, Office is installed to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office. These two files would then be copied to the following directory:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\1033\webcomp

If you did not install your Office files into the default directory, then you will need to make changes to the JumpURL.ini file. Open the file and note the following lines:

[JumpURL with Go Button]
Name="JumpURL with Go Button"
Description="Insert drop-down menu list with Go Button into your document."
URL="C:\Office 10\Office10\1033\webcomp\jumpURL\jumpURL.htm"

[Instant JumpURL]
Name="Instant JumpURL"
Description="Insert drop-down menu list into your document."
URL="C:\Office XP\Office10\1033\webcomp\jumpURL\jumpURL2.htm"

You'll need to change the path of the URL lines to match the location of the files on your hard disk. Once that is done, you're ready to give it a try.

Let's Give it a Try

In FrontPage, open a blank page. Select Insert-Web Component and the Web Component Dialog opens. You'll notice a new option for Jump URL added to the list of components.

There are two versions of the JumpURL component. One uses a Go Button and the other does an instant jump as soon as you make your selection. For this example, we'll use the Instant JumpURL. Make your selection and click the Finish button. This will open the configuration for your JumpURL.

In the URL field, type the address of the page you wish to jump to. In the Description field, type the descriptive text that will be displayed by the drop-down box. Click Add URL to List when you are satisfied. You can add as many URL's as you wish using this technique.

Click the drop-down arrow in the Preview screen to see how it will appear:

When you are finished, click the Finish button. Now open your page in your browser and test your JumpURL.

I found that it did not always work perfectly and sometimes I needed to re-enter a URL before I got it to work properly, but overall this is a fabulous add-in.
